Day 2 of chess camp. It has been really great. The camp is very well run. Everyone is enjoying it and learning a great deal. Yestereday I had the chance to meet Levon Aronian (ranked #2 in the world!) and sit in on one of his lectures. Today, I listened to a Q&A session with him. I was excited to hear that he considers his mom his hero. He was very humble and spoke of his embarassment of losing a game to Magnus Carlsen from a winning position. He has been playing chess professionally since receiving sponsorship from the age of 9.
I also got a chance to chat with Jay Stallings, who runs the SuperStates Championship Tournament and heads the California Youth Chess League (CYCL). He is rolling out a new Scholastic Chess Passport program which I am exicted to learn more about and share with you.
