Reigning World Chess Champion Magnus Carlsen will take on some of his biggest competitors at the 77th Tata Steel Chess Tournament from 9 - 25 January.
Current world number two and rising star of the chess world Fabiano Caruana, and winner of the 2014 Tata Steel Chess Tournament Levon Aronian will both play at the tournament. They will be joined by Women's World Chess Champion Hou Yifan and Dutch players Anish Giri and Loek van Wely.
The tournament will take place in its traditional location of Wijk aan Zee, but will also visit Rotterdam and The Hague.

The 2014 Sinquefield Cup
August 27-September 7, 2014
The top nine players in the world compete in a 10 round, double round robin chess tournament for $100,000 top prize and the Sinquefield Cup title. The players include Mangus Carslen, Levon Aronian, Fabiano Caruana, Hikaru Nakamura, Veselin Topalov and Maxime Vachier-Lograve.

The big winners at the 41st Chess Olympiad in Tromso are looking to be China and Russia.
China with 17 match points has a 1 point lead over Hungary after the 10th and the last round of the Chess Olympiad currently underway in Tromso, Norway and is set to win its first Chess Olympiad title. China, ranked 7th at the beginning of the tournament beat 3rd ranked France 2.5-1.5 while Hungary (ranked 5th) trounced 32nd ranked Romania 3-1. Eight teams share 3rd place with just one round to go. China will take on Poland in the 11th round while Hungary plays Ukraine.
In the women’s section Russia clung to a lead of 1 match point despite losing to Ukraine 1.5-2.5. Russia has 18 match points overall while Ukraine with 17 match points shares second place with China who drew with Spain 2-2. Russia will play Bulgaria in the final round while China takes on Ukraine.

“The Denker”, as it’s become known, is an annual event held in conjunction with the U.S. Open, in which the 51 champions of each state affiliate and the District of Columbia compete to determine who will be crowned the Denker Champion and receive a prestigious prize package including a 4 year Academic Distinction Scholarship from the University of Texas, Dallas. UTD has been a leader in the promotion of Scholastic Chess for many years.
