"Beauty is in the eye of the chess player"

Maria is a talented artist and Women’s Fide Chess Master with a 2183 Elo.

She showcases her vibrant personality and her passion for chess, romance and travel in her unique style she coins Colorful Cubism.

Born in 1988 in Lennigrad (later Sankt Petersburg), the cultural Russian capital, Maria Yugina (Mariya Yughina) developed her sense for harmony and aesthetics through a multilateral instruction.

Mariya graduated from the Russian Presidential Academy of National Economy and Public Administration.  Mariya's artistic talent manifested itself during early childhood and teenage through a series of prizes in painting and graphics contests, without having studied with painting masters.

Starting with the first year as a student, she systematically studied painting with Vladimir Bazhenov, member of the Russian Artists Union, being in contact with other renown painters from Sankt Petersburg. One of them, Vladimir Kojhevnikov, recently awarded with the Merited European Artist title.

Maria soon became a member of the Sankt Petersburg Painters' Union and over the past years her paintings were successful in several art galleries from her native city.

In addition to her classical style paintings, she has a collection of themed pieces combining her passion for art with her passion for the royal game of chess. Various chess positions are subtlety and brilliantly weaved into her vividly colored paintings.  Her painting style is inspired by the wide range of painting displayed at the Hermitage.  Her chess themed paintings pair cubism with an impressionist style creating a modern yet timeless quality.  She likes to call this style COLORFUL CUBISM. She prefers to paint oil on canvas.

Maria  married Romanian chess grandmaster Mihail Marin, a multiple national champion and bronze Olympic medalist in 2017.  They reside in Romania with their cat, Fortuna.

When she is not painting or exhibiting her work,  she enjoys traveling and playing in chess tournaments all over Europe with her husband.

Maria has had two personal art exhibitions in Bucharest (Sigma Gallery in 2018) and Elite Prof Art in 2019).She also holds a Capoeira green belt.  Capoeira is an Afro-Brazilian martial art that combines elements of dance, acrobatics, and music. It was developed by enslaved Africans in Brazil at the beginning of the 16th century.

Like her paintings, Maria is full of color and spirit.  She sees life as an adventure to be had.  Her magnetic personality and passion for life is clearly reflected in her paintings.
